Now, I remember the day Ecology and civil Engineering Society was launched. We, with Mr. Kumano, had been positioning the starting members and board members of this society. I became the first chief secretary of this society. I was supported by the president, the vice presidents and administrative staff at that time. The days were not easy but very impressive to me.

I have the confidence that by now this society has established an interdisciplinary scientific linkage between ecology and civil engineering fields. We have three generations at ECES: we are the first generation with primary fields of ecology and civil engineering and interacting with each other using our own scientific languages; the second generations are the society members who started their scientific activities based on this interdisciplinary science, and; the third generation are the students and young researchers who were educated in the laboratories of this new science. At the beginning stage of ECES, I was impressed that government officers, researchers in companies, and researchers and professors in universities and other organizations supported this society like the Trinity. By this time this trio has produced many scientific publications. Many young researchers, PhD students and undergraduate students also joined our society.

One of practical problems, to establish a financially independent administrative, was solved recently thank to the former president Dr. Toru Kondo. The new chief manager of administrative, Mr. Tsuruzo Ogawa, has been maintaining our society office very nicely. We have to continue this independent system and accomplish the primary balance of the finance of our society. We should issue the next mid-term plan, which should be compiled by the young and active secretary members with the help of reviewing and other supports from the board of directors, former presidents and vice-presidents.
